Our Story
In 2024, two working parents new to Yellowknife founded the YK KIDS-HUB Society to address the shortage of childcare and afterschool programs in the community two years prior. The parents had a young daughter who needed care. Waitlist at existing Centers in Yellowknife were years long. With support from a territorial government grant and the expertise of two Early Childhood Consultants, they took strategic actions to establish a new childcare center.
The dedicated parents conducted a needs assessment survey to determine the appropriate childcare model and priorities. They sought advice from other parents, existing childcare operators in & outside the territories, secured a lease with their local church, and developed comprehensive policies and procedures. The parents also canvassed shops, both online and offline, to purchased equipment and supplies. They harnessed their own resources while soliciting donations to fund the venture. The efforts of the parent attracted the interest of like-minded parents, who then came together to form the foundational Board of Directors.
Additionally, the parents liaised with municipal authorities, the corporate registry, and the department of education to ensure the center met all standards, inspection, and licensing protocols. Their tireless efforts resulted in the successful incorporation and launch of Y-K KIDS-HUB, a not-for-profit, charitable, and independent childcare organization.
